2021 Men's Golf Preview

SALEM, Mass. -- Led by first-year head coach Jimmy O'Reilly, Salem State looks forward to improving on their fifth place finish at last spring's MASCAC Championship held at the Ranch Golf Club in Southwick, Mass. The Vikings were picked fourth in the 2021 MASCAC Coaches Pre-Season Poll, but a strong returning senior class has Salem State in position to improve their standing in 2021.

Led by seniors captain Matt Godbout, assistant cpatain Travis Ryan, who placed 21st overall at last season's conference championship, and Matt Martin, these three provide a solid core, who have spent the summer improving and instilling the Salem State culture on the underclassman who will be competing for the first-time at the collegiate level.

"Each player in the program has to have the right mindset to reach their full potential as an individual and for us as a team. We can only control the future, which is the next shot that you play.  We have a good mix of talent across the board. I think what will dictate how the season plays out will be how quickly our new guys can adapt to the college game and the grind of qualifying each week and feeling the pressure. If they can adapt sooner rather than later, we could have a special season." Head Coach Jimmy O'Reilly

Three new players have entered the program, and all three will have the opprortunity to compete this fall. Freshman Danny DiLisio from Swampscott, Mass. was a two-time Team MVP at Swampscott High School and a 2020 Lynn Item First Team selection and two-time Salem News All-Scholatic selection . Ethan Doyle of Salem, Mass. was a four-time Northeast Conference All-Star, a 2020 Northeast Conference MVP, two-time Boston Globe All-Scholastic selection and the 2020 Salem News and Lynn Item Player of the Year. Doyle was also the 2019 NEPGA Junior Player of the Year.

Junior Brian Cannata from Wakefield, Mass. was a three-time Catholic Conference All-Star and the runner-up at the MIAA Division 2 State Championshop. He was also a Boston Herald All-Scholastic selection.

Salem State opens their season on Saturday, September 11 at the Middlebury Invitational.
