Strong Second Half Propels Owls Past Vikings

WESTFIELD, Mass. – For their last away game of the regular season, Salem State field hockey traveled to Westfield, Massachusetts to take on Little East Conference (LEC) foe, Westfield State University. A strong second half by the home team was able to propel the Owls past the Vikings by a tally of 5-1 and drop the Vikings to 4-11 on the season and 2-9 in LEC play.

Mikayla Mason (Beverly, Mass.) notched the lone goal for the Vikings, giving her three on the season. Meanwhile, freshman Hannah Cochran (Marshfield, Mass.), recorded her first assist in her young career as a Viking.

The Owls were led by Taylor Creech (Kennebunk, Maine) who had two goals to go along with one assist and Corryn Moroney (Granby, Mass.) who had two assists in the win.

After a scoreless first period, Mason wasted no time changing that in the second period when Cochran found her less than four minutes in to land the first goal of the game and give the Vikings the 1-0 edge. The Owls wasted no time sulking, as Creech found Skyla Harthcock (Martha's Vineyard, Mass.) on a cross to even the game at one.  Westfield attempted to add one more goal to their total in the second, but it was turned away by Viking keeper, Carson Reidy (Burlington, Mass.), to keep the game tied at one to enter the half.

Reidy picked up where she left off in the first half, saving an Owl shot on net, while her counterpart did the same for her squad to prolong the 1-1 stalemate. With four minutes left in the third period, Creech snuck one past Reidy giving her her first goal of the game and her team the 2-1 lead, which would carry them into the final 15 minutes of play.

Creech stayed hot for the Owls, cleaning up a rebound to expand their lead to two goals to start the fourth period. Shortly after, Sarah Richard (Templeton, Mass.) added one of her own to widen the gap and bring the game to 4-1 in the Owl's favor. Westfield would go one to score one more goal with 30 seconds to play, solidifying the 4-1 victory over the Vikings.
