Huskies Top Vikings in LEC Matchup

SALEM, MASS. – Salem State field hockey welcomed the University of Southern Maine to Alumni Field this evening for a Little East Conference (LEC) matchup. The Huskies remain undefeated in the LEC after taking the commanding 7-0 victory over the Vikings.

Sage Drinkwater (Steep Falls, Maine) led the charge for the Huskies notching a hat trick, with all three goals coming in the second half. Additionally, Brooke Carson (Bryant Pond, Maine) added two of her own in the victory.

The Huskies wasted no time getting on the scoreboard when Carson found the back of the net two minutes into the game to give her team the 1-0 tilt. Despite facing four penalty corners, the Vikings were able to keep the Southern Maine at bay and their lead at one to end the first stanza.

Going into the second period, the Huskies kept the pressure on the Vikings' defense, firing off four shots, before Jaigan Boudreau (Dayton, Maine) converted a penalty shot to give her team the two-goal cushion. Shortly after Mikayla Mason (Beverly, Mass.) gave the Vikings life as she weaved her way through various defenders before having her shot blocked by a Husky defender. On the other end for the Vikings, Kaia Hollingsworth (Methuen, Mass.) saved a shot on goal in the final minutes to keep the Huskies advantage at two going into halftime.

Chloe Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine) added onto the Huskies lead four minutes into the third when she snuck a shot past Hollingsworth. The Vikings attempted to answer back when Mackenzie Shminck (Danvers, Mass.) had a promising attempt before being turned away by Husky keeper, Julianna Kiklis (York, Maine). Soon after, Drinkwater notched Southern Maine's fourth goal of the contest to extend her squad's lead to four going into the final 15 minutes of play.

The Huskies would tack on three more goals in the final period to solidify the 7-0 victory.

Hollingsworth had 13 saves in the effort.
