Vikings Steal 1-0 Victory Over Blue Jays In Final Seconds

SALEM, Mass. -- This afternoon, Salem State welcomed the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) for a non- conference matchup. Vikings senior, Melanie Mason (Beverly, Mass.), scored in the final 30 seconds of the game to score the lone goal and give the Vikings their first win of the season over the Blue Jays.

The opening stanza set the tone for the game with the Vikings and Blue Jays firing off three and four shots, respectively, only to have them turned away by both squad's goalkeepers. This trend would carry over through the next two periods with Kaia Hollingsworth (Methuen, Mass.) making three saves for the Vikings, while her counterpart, Wendy Bowden (Old Saybrook, Conn.), turned away six of her own.

The final period continued in the same pattern until the final five minutes of play when the Vikings managed to force three penalty corners before Melanie Mason was able to find the back of the net with 30 seconds to play, proving to be enough to steal the 1-0 victory over the Blue Jays.

Hollingsworth finised with six saves in the win, while Bowden turned away ten for the Blue Jays.

The Vikings are on the road Friday, September 16 as they travel to Fitchburg, Massachusetts to take on the Falcons of Fitcburg State at 6p.m. in conference play.
