Salem State Loses 5-0 to WPI

SALEM, Mass. – WPI scored three first half goals en route to a 5-0 victory over Salem State on Thursday evening at Alumni Field, handing Salem State their first loss of the season. The Engineers improve to 1-1 on the year. The Vikings are now 2-1. 

Zoe Januszewski (Ventura, Calif.) scored the first goal of the game for WPI in the 9th minute, slipping a shot past goalkeeper Kelli McCarthy (Foxborough, Mass.).  Lauren Meinhold (Boxboro, Mass.) made it 2-0 in the 20th minute before Kelly Makechnie (Hampton Falls, Mass.) rifled in a shot from 12 yards out, giving the Engineers a commanding 3-0 lead.

Th Vikings tried to answer late as the home team set up a give and go, but Allison Coullard's (Tewksbury, Mass.) shot just missed the net. The Engineers fired off 10 first half shots to just two for Salem State.

Eliza Dutson (Woodstock, Conn.) put home a rebound in the 37th minute to increase the WPI lead to 4-0. Dutson (Woodstock, Conn.) closed the scoring with her second goal in the 56th minute to make the final 5-0.

Nini Acquista (Longmeadow, Mass.) picked up the win in net, making three saves. Ella Moreau (Huntington, Mass.) came on in relief and was credited with a save. McCarthy suffered her first loss of the year after making 16 saves.

The Engineers held a commanding 24-6 lead in shots and had a 15-4 advantage in corners.
