Salem State Blanks Gordon 2-0

WENHAM, Mass. -- Salem State picked up their second straight win to open the season on Saturday, posting a 2-0 shutout over Gordon College at the Brigham Athletic Complex. Mikayla Mason (Beverly, Mass.) and Mackenzie Schmink (Danvers, Mass.) each posted second quarter goals to propel the Vikings to a 2-0 record. The Fighting Scots go to 0-2. 

Following a tightly contested first quarter, Mikayla Mason gave the Vikings a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute. Schmink follwed suit in the 29th minute, with her first goal of the year. Shots (5) and penalty corners (5) were even in the first half between the teams.     

Gordon pressed offensively in the second half, rifiling off six shots and holding a 6-1 edge in corners. However, Salem State goalie Kelli McCarthy (Foxborough, Mass.) turned away each attempt, finishing with six saves on the day to earn the shutout.

Sophea Zaskoda (Lansdale, PA.) and Ella Gerrard (Natick, Mass.) split time in net for Gordon and combined for one save.
