SALEM, Mass.- Edward Field (Gloucester, Mass.) delivered a two-out, RBI base hit with the bases loaded in the bottom of the tenth inning to give Salem State an 8-7 victory over Wentworth on Tuesday afternoon at The Central Campus Baseball Field. The Vikings improve to 6-3 on the season while the Leopards sink to 10-4.

Salem State's pitcher Jake Boucher (Wallingford, Conn.) earned the victory. He pitched two scoreless innings, allowing only one hit while striking out three batters. Connor Whitehead (Southington, Conn.) for Wentworth ended up with a loss. He pitched for 3.1 innings, giving up three hits, one earned run and struck out four batters.

How Did It Happen?

  • Wentworth scored the first four runs of the game in the first. The highlight of the inning was Matthew Favazzo's (Lexington, Mass.) two-run double.
  • The Vikings managed to score two runs during the bottom half of the inning to reduce the deficit. Yabdriel Gonzalez (New Haven, Conn.) played a crucial role as he hit a single towards right field that allowed Antonio Belgrove (Stamford, Conn.) to score. The Vikings continued to put pressure on the Leopards and scored one more run before the end of the inning.
  • During the second inning, Wentworth managed to score their fifth run thanks to a sacrifice fly by Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.). The score remained that way until the fifth inning, when Mark Smith (East Haven, Conn.) hit an RBI knock to right field. This cut the lead to two runs with the game standing at 5-3.
  • During the sixth, both teams traded runs when Michael Petit (Sandwich, Mass.) scored for the Leopards run and James Dolan (Rockland, Mass.) hit an RBI single to left.
  • Salem State managed to score three times in the seventh inning to take the lead by a score of 7-6, which was highlighted by Field's game-tying double down the left field line.
  •  In the eighth inning, Favazzo hit an RBI double to tie the game at seven, but was thrown out at third while trying to stretch it into a triple.
  • The bases were loaded for Field when he delivered a walk-off single through the middle for an 8-7 Vikings' victory in extra innings.

Behind the Numbers

  • Smith went 4 for 4 with an RBI and was a home run shy of the cycle.
  • Owen Duggan (Billerica, Mass.), Field and James Dolan combined for six RBI.
  • Favazzo went 3 for 5 with three runs batted in including a double for Wentworth.

What's Next?

  • Salem State will travel to Gordon this Thursday, March 21 when the Vikings will take on the Gordon Fighting Scots. Game Time is at 3:00 p.m.
