Wheaton Roars Past Salem State

SALEM, Mass. -- Wheaton used a five-run first inning, propelled by a two-run home run from Kevin Matos, to coast to a 13-1 victory over Salem State on Friday at the Central Campus Baseball Field. The Lyons are now 11-2 on the season while the Vikings dip to 2-8.

A two-run double by Robert Wirtanen gave Wheaton a 3-0 lead before Matos followed with a two-run shot to right field. Starter Bobby Jellison (0-2) allowed six hits and eight runs before giving way to Greg Gentle. A three-run triple by Cavan Brady made it an 8-0 game in the second.   

Meanwhile, Lyons' starter Zach Clesas cruised thru the Salem State lineup, not allowing a hit until a double by James Dolan in the fifth inning. Leading 11-1 in the ninth, Tommy Beauregard added a two-run triple for Wheaton to cap the scoring. Aidan Lynch ripped a double to right in the bottom of the ninth for the Vikings, plating Derek Angell to break the shutout.

Clesas (2-1) gave up just two hits in 6.1 innings to earn the win. Emerson Tucholski retired the side in order for Salem State in the ninth.  AJ Guindon went 4-for-5 with three runs scored for the Lyons while Nick Croteau had two hits in four at-bats with three runs and three RBI. Salem State's offense struggled, registering just five hits in the game.
