Vikings Split Pair Against Plattsburgh

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Salem State split a doubleheader against Plattsburgh on Thursday, winning game one, 2-0 before losing the nightcap, 4-3. The Vikings are now 2-4 on their spring trip to Myrtle Beach. The Cardinals move to 3-6 on the year.

Three Viking pitchers combined for the game one shutout with Jake Usenia picking up his first win after throwing four scoreless innings, allowing just three hits with a strikeout and pair of walks. Carl Beatrice added two strong innings of no-hit relief without administering  a run before Jake Boucher retired the side in the seventh to earn his first save of the year.   

Salem State scored a first inning run on a groundout by EJ Field. Field added an insurance run in the sixth with an RBI double. The Vikings' relief pitchers did not give up a hit and allowed just two base runners to Plattsburgh over the final three innings. Boucher also went-2-for-2 at the plate, scoring both runs.

Salem State lost a tough 4-3 decision in game two. Owen Duggan doubled with one out in the seventh, but was stranded as the potential game-tying run as the Cardinals closed out the win.

Duggan and EJ Field each collected three hits in the game with Field adding a pair of RBI. Conor Dolan had two hits in three trips to the plate for the Vikings. Starter Nick Bamforth lasted one inning and allowed five hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Salem State used six pitchers with Mason Consigli taking the loss after allowing two runs on four hits with a walk.  

Salem State took a 2-1 lead in the first on a two-run single by Field. The Cardinals tied the game in the third on a single by Andrew Veit. An RBI groundout in the fourth regained the lead for Plattsburgh State before a passed ball scored Salem State's Tyler Wilson in the bottom of the bottom of the inning, retying the game 3-3.

Alex Kornblau's infield single in the fifth plated the game-winning run as Sean Malamud earned the save for the Cardinals with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. Starter Chris Santic earned the victory, going 4.1 innings while allowing three runs on nine hits with five strikeouts.
