Vikings Dispatch Gordon 10-3

SALEM, Mass. -- Juan Hurtado (Homestead, Fla.) pitched six scoreless innings, scattering three hits to lead Salem State past Gordon College 10-3 on Wednesday afternoon. The Vikings improve to 8-4 on the year while the Fighting Scots dip to 4-11. Hurtado gave up three singles and issued a walk with one strikeout in winning his first game this season (1-0).

Zach Piroh (Stratford, Conn.) had a 4-for-4 day with a pair of RBI and Traverse Briana (Peabody, Mass.) went 2-for-3 and drove in five runs for the second time this season. Salem State racked up 15 hits, including six doubles, with two coming from the bat of Brahiam Ortega (Lawrence, Mass.).

Salem State sent 10 men to the plate in the fourth as part of a six-run inning. Edward Field (Gloucester, Mass.) doubled in Piroh with the first run of the inning, making it 2-0 in favor of the Vikings. A single by Tim Catalano (Brewster, N.Y.) and and a wild pitch made the score 4-0 before Briana added two more runs on a line drive to center. Piroh collected his second hit of the inning, a base hit to right, putting the Vikings on top 7-0.

Briana added a two-run single in the seventh and Piroh followed with his second RBI of the game to put the Vikings on top 10-0.

Cam Erickson (Everett, Mass.) replaced Hurtado in the seventh.  Gordon finally got on the board after a wild pitch with the bases loaded. 

Matt Consigli (Northbridge, Mass.) relieved Erickson in the eighth, allowing a pair of runs, including an RBI single to Gabe Coyne-Martinez (Pittsfield, Mass.).   

Zack Fay (Newburyport, Mass.) suffered the loss for Gordon, lasting just three innings, giving up four runs on five hits with four walks and a strikeout.

Trevor Xenos (Holden, Mass.) closed the game for Salem State with a scoreless ninth.

Jonathan McIntyre (Carmenl, N.Y.) and Patrick Tevenan (South Weymouthm Mass.) had two hits apiece for the Fighting Scots.
