THE LEAD – Emily Carter tossed a complete-game shutout to power Salem State University over Lesley University, 2-0, Thursday afternoon in NCAA Division III softball action. The second scheduled game of the twinbill was washed out due to rain.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Vikings gave Carter all the run support she'd need with an unearned run in the first to jump out to a quick 1-0 lead. SSU worked a pair of walks to start the action before the runners moved up a base on a passed ball. Dawn Eisnor came in from third on a wild pitch to open the scoring before LU got out of the jam without any further damage.
  • Lesley threatened in the fourth as MJ Jones led off the frame with a walk and immediately advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Carter remained calm, getting the next three batters in order to strand the tying run in scoring position to preserve the 1-0 cushion.
  • The Lynx managed to get two aboard in the sixth thanks to a leadoff single from Isabella Moscoso before Leah St. John was hit by a pitch but Carter once again avoided damage to preserve the edge.
  • Salem State added an insurance run in the bottom half of the sixth on a sac fly by Isabelle Besser to make it a 2-0 game before Carter retired the side in order in the seventh to preserve the win for SSU.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Carter picked up the complete-game win to improve to 4-9 on the year, scattering three hits while striking out six.
  • Emma Hodgkins was the tough-luck loser, going 6.0 innings and allowing the two runs, both unearned, on five hits while striking out six.
  • Along with Moscoso, Lesley also got hits from Kari Sorensen and Madison Herbert.
  • Samantha Gaona was the only player on either lineup with a multi-hit outing going 2-for-2 with a walk and run scored for the Vikings.
