SALEM, Mass. – Salem State notched a 3-1 win over Suffolk on Wednesday evening at Twohig Gymnasium. The Vikings won by scores of 25-17, 25-17, 27-25 and 25-11 to move to 6-4 on the season. The Rams go to 2-6.
Darcy McDowell (Goshen, N.Y.) led the way in set one, securing six kills while Morgan Adams (Scotia, N.Y.) racked up 13 assists as Salem State jumped out to a 14-4 lead off five straight points on McDowell's serve. Suffolk hit just .083 while committing nine errors on 36 attempts. In set two, the Vikings once again opened up an early advantage as a kill by McDowell made the score 13-7 in favor of Salem State. Back-to-back kills from Haley Reed (Goffstown, N.H.) and McDowell put the Vikings in control at 23-15.
Ashley Fahey (Billerica, Mass.) put the Rams up 5-1 to start the third, scoring five straight points off her serve. A kill by Brynn O'Neill (Danvers, Mass.) and an ace by McDowell cut the deficit to 7-5, and the two teams battled in a tightly contested set with neither team gaining more than a two-point lead the rest of the way. Trailing 23-22, a kill by Fahey and an attack error gave Suffolk a 24-23 lead. However, Salem State battled back to tie the score at 25-all before an attack error and kill by Talia Lombardo (Windham, N.H.) gave the Rams a 27-25 win.
Salem State took control in set four, opening a 16-4 lead as Suffolk posted a -.292 hitting percentage in the final set, making 10 errors. Kills by O'Neill and Danielle Joseph (Waltham, Mass.) made the score 19-10 before a 6-1 run closed out the set.
McDowell finished with 11 kills, five aces and 13 digs while O'Neill contributed 10 kills and four digs. Adams had a game-high 35 assists and Samantha Chaisson (Duxbury, Mass.) added 21 digs.
Bridget Allison (Westford, Mass.) led Suffolk with eight kills and 10 digs. Dakhensey Marcellus (Brockton, Mass.) chipped in with 20 digs while Lombardo tallied 22 assists.
