UMass Dartmouth Edges Salem State 2-1

UMass Dartmouth Edges Salem State 2-1

DARTMOUTH, Mass. --  Sophomore Jillian Prout's (Dartmouth, Mass.) breakaway conversion with 11:46 remaining lifted UMass Dartmouth a 2-1 non-league college women's soccer victory over Salem State in its season opener Saturday afternoon at Cressy Field.

The host Corsairs (1-0) grabbed a 1-0 advantage just 3:32 into the match when senior Nerida Montrond (Lynn, Mass.) converted a corner kick from fellow senior Ella Rath (Pawcatuck, Conn.), but the visiting Vikings (1-2) evened matters with just 62 seconds remaining in the opening half when sophomore Angela Berry (Salem, Mass.) took a pass from senior Devyn Malatesta (Wilmington, Mass.) for her first tally of the fall.  Prout provided the heroics in the closing minutes for UMass Dartmouth, as she broke in from the right side and lifted a shot into the left corner of the net from 10 yards out for her second career game-winning goal that accounted for the final margin.

Junior Jaimee O'Brien (West Springfield, Mass.) picked up the win in goal with a three-save effort for the Corsairs, while junior Rebecca Sabino (Peabody, Mass.) made seven stops in the setback for Salem State.  UMass Dartmouth outshot the Vikings by a 16-10 margin overall (9-4 on goal) and enjoyed a 6-2 edge in corner kicks for the contest.
