Huskies Skate Past Vikings 3-1

SALEM, Mass. -- Shannon Colbert (Manomet, Mass.) scored two goals to lead the Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-1 win over the Salem State Vikings at Richard H. Rockett Arena on "Pink the Rink Day" on Saturday. The Huskies improve to 8-10-2 on the season and 6-5 in the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC). The Vikings drop to 3-13-1 for the year and 2-8-1 in the NEHC.

8:58 into the first period, the Huskies struck first as Shannon Douglas (Telford, England) scored on the weak side. Brianna Doty (Lyndonville, VT) flew down the ice and took a shot that was initially saved. Douglas recovered the puck and shot it into the right of the net to put Southern Maine up 1-0.

With 00:55 remaining in the first period, the Huskies had a power-play and won a faceoff in the Vikings' zone. Salem State was out of position coming out of the faceoff, and Colbert made them pay as Southern Maine went up 2-0.

In the second period, Colbert picked up a penalty for cross-checking giving the Vikings a power play. Casie Curtin (Wrentham, Mass.) put a spiraling puck past goalie Whitney Padgett (Eden Prairie, Minn.) cuting the deficit to 2-1 with 10:57 left in the second period.

The Vikings had a chance to tie it up with 00:34 left in the third period having a faceoff in their offensive zone. However, Salem State ended up losing the puck and Colbert scored the empty- netter to seal the 3-1 win.

Salem State had the advantage on shots on goal with 25 to Southern Maine's 10.

Southern Maine's Padgett earned the win (6-9-2) with a performance of one goal allowed and 24 saves.
