SALEM, MASS. – Casie Curtin (Wrentham, Mass.) scored two goals and Isabelle Woodward (Ottawa, Ontario) stopped 21 shots as Salem state handed New England College a 4-1 loss on Saturday afternoon in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action. The Vikings improve to 4-7- 1 and 3-5-1 in conference while the Pilgrims slide to 2-11-1 and 2-6-1 in the league.
Salem State opened the first by outshooting New England College 10-2, but could not convert on the scoreboard, exiting the period with a 13-7 advantage over the Pilgrims in shots, but scoreless on the scoreboard.
Vicki Shaw (Dracut, Mass.) put New England College up 1-0 early in the second before Curtin put home a one-timer off a feed from Ashley Wojewodzic (Lynn, Mass.), tying the game at 1-1 six minutes into the period. Kylie Currier (Middleton, Mass.) put the Vikings back on top with a beautiful backhanded breakaway goal at the 12:59 mark of the second period. Curtin extended the lead to 3-1 as she deflected a shot past goalie Ashley Castriotta (Framingham, Mass.) in the final minute of the period.
Danielle Kelly (Charlestown, Mass.) notched her fourth goal of the season on a Salem State power play to increase the margin to 4-1 at 14:45 of the third period.
Castriotta made 38 saves for the Pilgrims, who were outshot 38-22 for the game.
