SALEM, Mass. –- Salem State University celebrated the 1986 NCAA Championship women's basketball team's induction into the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Hall of Fame during halftime of the women's basketball game against Fitchburg State on Saturday.

The Vikings welcomed back team members, Trish O'Brien, Pam Weatherbee-Metcalf, Evelyn Oquendo, Beth Kapnis-Livermore, Maureen Canney, Annie Breitenwischer, and former head coach Tim Shea and associate head coach Charlie Maihos.

The 1985-86 team posted a 29-1 record, which included a 23-game winning streak, leading to the school's first and only team national championship.  Led by three-time All-American guard Evelyn Oquendo, Salem State became the first New England women's basketball team to claim an NCAA championship.

The team was inducted into the Salem State Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 1996 and the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003.
