Brandeis Wins 74-61 Over Vikings

SALEM, Mass. -- Camila Casanueva's (Santa Barbara, Calif.) game-high 30 points (10-15) led the Brandeis Judges (2-3) past the Salem State Vikings 74-61 on Tuesday evening at Twohig Gymnasium. Casanueva also grabbed eight rebounds, had 6 steals, and went 5-8 (63%) from behind the arc.

The Judges charged to a 13-4 lead in the first quarter by being the aggressors on both ends of the floor. Brandeis shot 55.6% from the field while keeping Salem State at 26.3% with their tight zone defense in the first quarter.

The Vikings' struggles on the offensive side continued into the second quarter as Brandeis led 35-18 at halftime. The Vikings shot 21% (8-38) from the field and just 6.7% (1-15) from three. The Judges kept Salem State from narrowing their lead shooting 45% (14-31) from the field and 36.4% (4-11) from behind the arc.

For much of the third quarter, both teams traded baskets until Salem State (1-5) went on an 8-0 run with the help of Brianna Rodriguez (Salem, Mass.) hitting back-to-back threes. The Vikings outscored the Judges 26-21 at the end of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 12 with the score at 56-44.

In the 4th quarter, the Vikings still struggled offensively, shooting 6-21 from the field as Brandeis went wire-to-wire with the lead.

Gianna Moschella (Peabody, Mass) poured in 22 points (9-18) for the Vikings.

For the game, Brandeis shot 44.6% (25-56) from the floor while the Vikings were  (23-77) 29.9% from the field.

Salem State led the game with 29 bench points to the Judges' six.

The Vikings will be on the road for their next game against Emmanuel College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
