Huskies Win Twice Over Vikings

SALEM, Mass. - Erin Martin (Biddeford, Maine) went 3-for-5, with two RBI and Ashley Alward pitched five strong innings as the Southern Maine Huskies defeated Salem State 10-1 in game one of their doubleheader. The Huskies earned the sweep with a dominating performance by starter Alexis Brown (Malden, Mass.), who struck out 10, in a shutout win in game two. Southern Maine goes to 9-7 on the year while the Viking slip to 9-11.

Game 1

Leading 1-0, with a player on first base, Martin doubled to left field in the top of the second inning to give Southern Maine a 2-0 lead. A base hit by Brown drove in the third run for a 4-0 lead.

In the third inning, Hannah Kenney (Oxford, Maine) doubled and came home on a Salem State error for a 5-0 advantage.

With runners on first and third in the bottom of the fifth inning. Salem State broke the shutout when Sydney Chiasson (Hudson, Mass.) brought home Ivy Bonoldi (Medfield, Mass.) with a bunt as the Vikings trailed 6-1.

An Erin Martin (Biddeford, Maine) double capped a four-run sixth as the Huskies went ahead 10-1 before closing out the win in six innings.

Dominique Del Vecchio (Stoneham, Mass.) received the loss with 6.0 innings pitched and three earned runs allowed. Alward gave up six hits and did not allow an earned run in the victory.

Game 2

Brown allowed just five hits as Southern Maine shutout Salem State 3-0.

In the second inning, the Huskies put two runners in scoring position and Lauren Gasaway (Old Town, Maine.) hit an RBI-single as Ashley Alward (Cornville, Maine) advanced to third base. Brynn Hink (Porter, Maine) followed with a base hit and Alward scored to give Southern Maine a 2-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, with the bases, Kayleigh Bohan (Bedford, N.H.) walked, scoring Alward to extend Southern Maine's lead to 3-0.

Gracie Hogan (Northbridge, Mass.) took the loss, going 4.1 innings with one earned run on five hits. Dominique Del Vecchio (Stoneham, Mass.) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings in relief.
