Salem State Ends Regular Season With 2-2 Tie Against Plymouth State

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Michael Shippee (Seattle, Wash.) put Salem State ahead with 2:06 to play, but Jake Gerbner (Havertown, Pa.) notched the game-tying goal with just 1:32 left in regulation as Plymouth State rallied to tie Salem State University, 2-2, in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's ice hockey regular season finale at Hanaway Rink on Tuesday night.

Plymouth State wraps up the regular season with a 13-9-3 mark, while going 13-3-2 in MASCAC play. The Panthers claim the regular season title and top seed for the upcoming MASCAC Tournament and will receive a bye into the semifinal round next Tuesday (Mar. 3). Salem State moves to 4-14-7 and 4-9-5 in league play. The Vikings earn the five seed for the tournament and will visit fourth-seeded Westfield State for a first-round match-up on Saturday (Feb. 29).

Plymouth State took a first period lead when the puck ricocheted off the end boards to sophomore Mike McPherson (Somerville, Mass.), who backhanded it into the net at the 5:09 mark. Salem State pulled even less than four minutes later on a controversial goal. Senior goaltender Andreas Pettersson (Trollhattan, Sweden) made the initial stop of freshman Cam Ryan's (Arlington, Mass.) shot, but the puck was loose and Ryan, who had fallen to the ice, pushed both the puck and Pettersson into the net to tie the game.

The score would remain deadlocked until late in the third period.

The Vikings went ahead with just 2:06 to play when Shippee converted a one-timer to the back post on a pass through the slot during a 3-on-2 break.

Plymouth State took a timeout and Pettersson came off to give the Panthers an extra skater and Gerbner squared the game at 2-2 on a one-timer from his knees with 1:32 left in regulation.

Neither team was able to break through in the extra frame.

Pettersson made 21 saves to move to 12-4-3, while senior Sean Cleary (Barnstable, Mass.) stopped 43 shots to move to 4-12-7. PSU held a 45-23 advantage in shots.
