Hawks Clip Vikings In Overtime

SALEM, Mass. – Matt Chisholm (Scituate, Mass.) scored the game winning goal with just nine seconds remaining in overtime as St. Anselm came from behind to defeat Salem State 5-4 at Rockett Arena on Wednesday evening. The Hawks improve to 8-7-1 while the Vikings go to 2-8-2.

Salem State scored three first period goals to build a 3-1 advantage after one. Race Bennett (Ballston, N.Y.) corralled a loose puck near the blue line and went top shelf to give Salem State a 1-0 lead just over two minutes into the game. Landon Hasenfuss (Hanover, Mass.) extended the lead just over four minutes later, winning the draw and then tipping in a shot by Derek Scroggins (Anchorage, Alaska). Shawn Moors (Pointe Claire, Quebec) got one back for St. Anselm at the 7:06 mark before Callum Hofford's (Woodbridge, Onatrio) one-timer on the power play, gave Salem State a 3-1 advantage heading into the second period.

Neither team found the back of the net in the second, despite a 23-8 shot advantage by the Hawks. Sean Cleary (Barnstable, Mass.) came up big in the period to keep Salem State in front. However, Anthony Iacullo (Barrington, III.) broke the drought as he rifled one over the glove of Cleary to draw St. Anselm's to within a goal, 3-2 at the 6:12 mark of the third.  Chisholm then setup Liam O'Sullivan (North Hampton, N.H.) with the game-tying goal with just over six minutes remaining.

Joe Smith's (Holbrook, Mass.) goal regained the lead for Salem State at the 15:00 mark, but John Femia (Canton, Mass.) found an open net, tying the score once again at 17:50.

With seconds remaining in overtime, the Hawks kept possession in their zone and Chisholm knocked in the game-winner from just outside the crease.

Cleary made 42 saves in the loss while Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.) stopped 28 shots for St. Anselm.
