Gordon Stifles Vikings' Offense

SALEM, Mass. - Justin Johnson's (San Jose, Calif.) two-run single in the seventh broke open a scoreless game as the Gordon Fighting Scots obtained a 5-1 win over the Salem State Vikings on Tuesday at The Central Campus Baseball Field. Gordon scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning, with two coming from an Erik Gauer (Wayland, N.Y.) double. The Fighting Scots are now 1-0 on the season. Salem State falls to 1-3 on the year.

Heading into the seventh, Shane Demers (Sandy Hook, Conn.) singled and Brad Welch (Stokesdale, NC) followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Johnson then hit a hard ground ball into center to make it a 2-0 game for Gordon.

Later in the inning, with the bases were loaded and reliever Matthew Enos (Beverly, Mass.) facing Mike Oley (Barkhamsted, Conn.) Olney forced a walk to plate Johnoson as the Fighting Scots' lead grew to 3-0. Gauer then launched a ground-rule double to drive in two more runs to make it 5-0.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Vikings finally scored as Madoc Fisher (Wayne, NJ), who went 3-for-4, led off the inning with a triple. Ryan Collins (Peabody, Mass.) knocked in Fisher with Salem State's lone run.

Gordon, pitcher Mark Gadaleta (Chappaqua, NY) earned the win (1-0) with 4.0 IP, 1 ER, 4 K, and 4 H.

For Salem State, pitcher JP Reiling (Nahant, Mass.) ended up with the loss (0-1) with 0.0 IP, 2 ER, and 2 H. 

Joe Pedulla (Monroe, N.J.) started for Gordon, he went 5.0 IP with 3 H and 3 K.

Salem State used seven pitchers with Juan Hurtado (Homestead, Fla.) getting the start.  Hurtado pitched 4.2 IP with 1 H and 5 BB and 2 K while not allowing a run.
