Athletic Hall of Fame

Article I:  Purpose
 
The Salem State University Hall of Fame has been established to honor and perpetuate the memory of athletes who have performed at the highest level of intercollegiate athletic competition while a student at Salem State University and to honor other individuals and/or teams for their service to athletics. 
 
Article II:  Eligibility/Criteria for Membership
 

  1. Eligibility shall not begin until five (5) years after the athlete or team has finished athletic competition.

 

  1. An individual nominee for athletic competition must be a graduate of Salem State University.

 

  1. An individual nominee must appear on end of the season Sports Information roster.

 

  1. Criteria for selection shall be based primarily on athletic accomplishment, integrity, sportsmanship and character.  Consideration shall be given to the individuals’ and/or team’s total contribution to the team or teams on which he/she played and to Salem State University.

 

  1. In addition, other individuals (non-athletes) may be inducted in recognition of their contributions and services to the Salem State University athletic program.  Eligibility begins upon end of service.

 

  1. The Selection Committee shall not discriminate against any person on the

basis of race, creed, color, national or ethnic origin, sex, age or disability.
 

  1. If a nominee who is selected by the Hall of Fame Selection Committee declines to accept this honor, they will be notified that their selection will be null and void.

 

  1. The Selection Committee may choose to waive the eligibility criteria for a particular nominee given extenuating circumstances with a two-thirds (2/3) vote of the committee.

 
                  Article III:  Hall of Fame Selection Committee
 
1.         The Hall of Fame Selection Committee shall consist of fifteen (15) voting members:
 

  1. The Directors of Alumni Affairs and Athletics will appoint the

members of the committee with at least two (2) from among the members
of the Hall of Fame.  Committee members will have an affiliation with SSU.
 

  1. The Director of Athletics (or designee) will chair the committee and may vote or serve as an ex officio member with no vote.

 

  1. The Director of Sports Information (or designee) may serve either as a full member or as an ex officio member with no vote.

 
            d.         A staff member from Institutional Advancement may serve either as a full member or as an ex officio member with no vote.
 
 
Article IV:  Nomination and Selection Process
 
1.         Nominations for selection to the Hall of Fame should be in writing using the Hall of Fame nomination form. Nominations may be submitted by members of the University community including students, faculty, administration, alumni and friends.
 
2.         A call for nominations will be issued annually through the Salem State University
            Statement, other alumni publications and the media.
 
3.         Selection to the Hall of Fame requires a two-thirds (2/3) vote of the members
            of the Committee.  Committee members will receive and review the nomination booklet             at least two weeks prior to the meeting.  The first vote will take place prior to any   discussion and any nominee with a two-thirds majority will be inducted.  Subsequent          rounds of voting will take place only after all remaining viable candidates are discussed.   
 
4.         All nominations remain active for five consecutive years from the
            most recent nomination date.
 
Article V:  Induction Limitations
 
Except for the inaugural year, 1986, whereupon there shall be no more than fifteen (15)
charter members of the Hall of Fame selected from individuals who contributed prior
to 1985, no more than five (5) student athletes, two (2) contributors and one (1) team may be inducted every two years.  The Committee shall make every effort to select a group of inductees whom are representative of all sports.
 
Article VI:  Meeting Notification
 
Members of the Selection Committee will be notified of the time and place
of meetings two (2) weeks in advance of such meetings.
 
Article VII:  Hall of Fame Housing
 
The Salem State University Hall of Fame shall be housed in the Richard B. O’Keefe Complex.  A Wall of Fame shall be established in a visible location where appropriate recognition can be given to members of the Hall of Fame.
