Bio

In a long and distinguished coaching career at Salem State College, Blackwell has served as a winning head coach for three sports at the College. He coached baseball from 1963 to 1966, basketball from 1966 to 1972 and women’s softball from 1979 to 1983. Under his direction the baseball team posted an undefeated season in 1963 winning the New England State College Athletic Conference Championship; they repeated as champions in 1964. In his six years as basketball coach the team won four division titles and two New England championships. The 1967-68 team went undefeated. During his four years at the helm of the softball team they won two MASCAC Championships and finished second the other two years. He was voted New England Small College Basketball “Coach of the Year” for the 1966-67 basketball season. Blackwell has been a member of the faculty of the Sports, Fitness and Leisure Studies Department at the College since 1962.

 

Active in several professional associations, he is a member of the Board of Directors of the North Shore Campfire Girls. He received both his undergraduate and graduate degree from Springfield College. Blackwell, a Rhode Island native, lives in Salem. He has two daughters Bonnie and Wendy.
