Bio

Frederick A. Meier served as the seventh President of Salem State College from 1954-1975. During his 22 years as President he strongly believed intercollegiate athletics were an integral part of higher education. It was under Dr. Meier’s leadership that the College began its development of a broad based intercollegiate athletic program. Dr. Meier presided over the College during its dynamic period of growth when it went from a full-time student population of 600 to over 4,200. He was the primary architect of Salem State College as it is known today. With the support of then Senate President Kevin B. Harrington, Dr. Meier procured funding and received approval to build the Richard B. O’Keefe Physical Education and Athletic Complex. Dr. Meier lives in Bridgewater with his wife Louise. The have a son Frederick Jr. and three grandchildren, Emily, Frederick III, and Robert.
