Salem State Earns Second Straight Shutout

SALEM, MASS. –  Salem State won their second straight match and third in four games with a 3-0 sweep of Mitchell College on Thursday evening at Twohig Gymnasium. The Vikings dispatched the Mariners by scores of 25-16, 25-12 and 25-20.

Jasmine Severino (Lawrence, Mass.) led the way with 10 kills while Morgan Adams (Scotia, N.Y.) had 21 assists and four aces. Payton Pizzano Stoughton, Mass.) notched seven assists and Brynn O'Neill (Danvers, Mass.) had seven kills, six digs and three aces.  

Mitchell was topped by Shyla Phillips-Krick's (Griswold, Conn.) 11 digs and Cameron Childs (Gainesville, Fla.), who had 10 assists, five digs and three aces.

Salem State (4-3) opened up a nine-point lead in the first set as back-to-back kills by Severino put the Vikings on top 21-12. The two teams traded points until an error and kill by Emily Hennessy (Hanover, Mass.) closed out the match. Four straight points on the serve by O'Neill in set two gave Salem State a comfortable margin at 16-7. Mitchell (0-4) struggled to close out the game as the Mariners hit -.067 in the middle set while scoring just 12 points. Childs staked Mitchel to an early lead in set three, as she produced three straight points off the serve, giving the Mariners a 4-0 lead. However, Salem State stormed back, outscoring the Mariners, 14-5 as the Vikings outhit the visitors .308-.59 in the final set. Mitchell did cut the lead to 21-17, but two kills from O'Neill and one from Danielle Joseph (Waltham Mass.) helped the Vikings earn a five-point victory.
