Vikings Shut Out Mass Maritime, 2-0

SALEM, Mass. - Taylor Capozzi scored two goals for the Salem State Vikings to hold off the Mass Maritime Buccaneers 2-0 on Saturday on Think Pink Night. The Vikings dominated possession throughout the game making it tough for the Buccaneers to get an offensive flow. Salem State improves to 6-6-2 on the season and 3-1-1 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC). Mass Maritime moves to 2-12 for the year and 0-5 in the MASCAC.

In the 41st minute, freshman forward Lyndsey Martins (Medford, Mass.) was inside the 18-yard box and passed it to senior midfielder Taylor Capozzi (Lynn, Mass.) who knocked the ball under a Buccaneers defender and past Mass Maritime netminder Paige Albertson (Nantucket, Mass.) to put the Vikings on top, 1-0.

At the end of the first half, Salem State was ahead 1-0 while dominated possession. Mass Maritime played the majority of the half on their defensive side of the field. The Vikings limited the Buccaneers to zero shots and no corners. Salem State had three corners and attempted six shots and four were on target.

In the 82nd minute, Capozzi led the counter attack for the Vikings from midfield. Capozzi took an initial shot that was saved by Albertson, but the crafty midfielder picked up the rebound and scored off a low shot to take a 2-0 lead.

Lily Pfefferle (St. Paul, Minn.) and Rebecco Sabino (Peabody, Mass.) shared time in goal. Sabino got the win (6-6-2) finishing with a perfect sheet. Pfefferle finished with no allowed goals and one save. Albertson took the loss (2-12) conceding two goals with eight saves.

The Vikings will face Keene State for the next match on the road on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
