#17 MIT Blanks Salem State 5-0

Cambridge, Mass. -- Powered by five second half goals, three of which came in a span of 3:47 seconds, the No. 17 ranked MIT women's soccer team defeated Salem State University, 5-0, on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup. 

MIT took 25 shots in the opening stanza but the Engineers were kept off the scoreboard as Salem State keeper Rebecca Sabino made 15 saves over the opening 45 minutes of action.

The Engineers finally scored their first goal at the 54:10 mark as senior Emily Berzolla (Riverside, Conn.) finished a short pass at the top of the box from classmate Sophia Struckman (Scottsdale, Ariz.) for her fifth goal of the season.

Less than ten minutes later sophomore Karenna Groff (Weston, Mass.) deposited her fourth goal of the year into the top left corner of the net off a pass from senior Claire O'Callaghan (Sherborn, Mass.) for the 2-0 advantage.

Then with 6:25 remaining in regulation, MIT scored three times in a span of 3:47 ending the match at 5-0 in favor of the Engineers. Struckman scored her second goal of the year off a free kick in the 84th minute, sophomore Emily Larson (Ankeny, Iowa) finished a cross from classmate Anna Weinstein (Greenwood Village, Colo.) in the 85th minute and first-year Savannah Lawrence (Tucker, Ga.) netted her first collegiate goal in the 88th minute.

Sabino finished with 19 saves while starter Riley Terando (Folsom, Calif.) did not face a shot in the win. Lauren Castle (Ridgefield, Conn.) made one save in relief.
