Head Coach Nicolle Wood Earns 100th Career Win in Salem State's 5-0 Victory Over Rivier

SALEM, Mass. – Head coach Nicolle Wood '95 notched her 100th career win on Wednesday evening in Salem State's 5-0 victory over Rivier. Wood who has led the Vikings since 2006, is the second women's soccer coach to reach the century mark milestone. Before the game, women's soccer player Marcy Maglio Colinet '95, who was recently inducted into the Hall of Fame at Salem State, participated in the ceremonial pre-match coin flip.    

In a game delayed by lighting, Katie Brown (Milford, Mass.) scored two goals and had an assist to help the Vikings earn their first win of the season.

Salem State (1-1) controlled the tempo early on, and after Devyn Malatesta (Wilmington, Mass.) crossed a perfect pass to Brown, who volleyed in a goal, the Vikings led 1-0 in the second minute.

Later, on a fast break opportunity, Salem State's Brown passed it to Teagan Gilliss (Danvers, Mass.) for a low sinking shot into the bottom left side of the net to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead in the 19th minute. 

In the 39th minute, Lyndsey Martins (Medford, Mass.) was one on one with goalkeeper Kasey Smith (Hopkinton, NH). Smith tried to capture the ball but Martins slipped away with an open net and scored. The goal was the freshman's first career goal at Salem State.  

The Vikings led 3-0 at the half after dominating possession for the first 45 minutes. Salem State's defense limited Rivier (0-2) to only one shot for the half, while the Vikings attempted 11 shots with 10 going on target.

In the second, Emily Boyle (Manchester, NH) crossed a ball to Malatesta , who softly kicked in the fourth goal, extending the Salem State lead to 4-0 in the 59th minute.

Brown capped the scoring with her second goal in the 73rd minute with a shot that slithered past the goalie and a defender, making the final 5-0.

The Raiders finished the game with only two shots compared to 18 for Salem State as the Vikings harassed Rivier's forwards all evening.

Rebecca Sabino (Peabody, Mass.) earned the win while Lily Pfefferle (St. Paul, Minn.) finished the game in net for the Vikings.

Rivier goalie Smith allowed all five goals, while making had nine saves.
