Bridgewater State Pulls Away for 4-1 Victory

SALEM, Mass. – Bridgewater State received goals from four different players as the Bears erased a one-goal deficit at halftime to defeat Salem State 4-1 at Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon. Bridgewater State improves to (2-2-1) and (1-0) in the MASCAC while the Vikings slip to (1-3) and (0-1) in conference.

Salem State opened up the scoring in the third minute as Katie Brown (Milford, MA) split through the Bridgewater State defenders to put the Vikings up by one goal. Six minutes later, Emma Sanders (Seekonk, Ma) narrowly missed tying the game as her shot hit off the crossbar.

Bridgewater State had seven corners in the first half and dominated possession late, but couldn't convert the opportunities into goals as they trailed at halftime 1-0.

Alana Vincent (Taunton, Ma) put the Bears on the scoreboard in the 59th minute to start a run of four unanswered goals by Bridgewater State.

The Bears continued to test Salem State's defense, scoring three straight times to win going away. A corner taken by Emma Sanders (Seekonk, MA) delivered to Nicole Simas (Dartmouth, MA) for a diving header put the Bears ahead 2-1. Taylor Loyd (Halifax, MA) then assisted Amelia Burke (Plymouth, MA) off of a corner in the 79th minute to extend the lead to two goals.

In the 82nd minute, the Bears' Kellsie Mitchell took advantage of a misplay by the Vikings' defense to score Bridgewater State's fourth goal of the game.

Both goalkeepers, Amanda Backe (Danvers, Mass.) for Salem State and the Bears' Kellie Souza (Wilmington, Mass.) had two saves for the game. Bridgewater State had a total of 15 shots to just five for the Vikings.
