Owls Overpower Salem State

WESTFIELD, Mass. - Westfield State scored 14 of the first 15 goals in the match as the Owls women's lacrosse team sailed to a 17-4 win over Salem State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference game at Alumni Field on Saturday evening.

The Owls opened the scoring with goals from Allie Fedak and Haley Mate' in the first three minutes of the game, before the Vikings countered with a tally from Taylor Lund.

Elizabeth Navoni answered for Westfield scoring off a feed from Lucy Barrett on a free position set, to put Westfield up 3-1, and the Owls rattled off the next 11 goals to get the clock to running time, and the Owls led 15-2 at halftime.

Navoni and Kelly Gearin led the Owls with three goals and an assist each.  Fedak, Barrett, Maddie Bartkus, and Sydney Lambert each netted two goals for the Owls, who tallied 12 assists on their 17 goals.  10 different players tallied at least one point for Westfield.

Maria Woodall earned the win in goal for Westfield, allowing two goals while playing the first half.  Sam Simonetty and Emma Duffy split the second half between the pipes for the Owls.  Gianna DeNisco made three saves for the Vikings. Westfield improves to 3-7 overall and levels their MASCAC record at 1-1 after playing a rugged non-conference schedule to open the season.

Tara McLaughlin finished with two goals and an assist for the Vikings.

Westfield held a 20-12 advantage in shots, and a 23-10 advantage in ground balls.
