Southern Maine Defeats Salem State 15-6

SALEM, Mass. – Aliza Jordan (Gorham, Maine) scored five goals and Megan Violette (Portland, Maine) added four as Southern Maine dispatched Salem State 15-6 on Thursday evening at Alumni Field. The Huskies raced out to a 7-3 halftime lead and never looked back in improving to 2-3 on the year. The Vikings are now 1-6.

Violette, Jordan, Alex Farley (Buxton, Maine) – 3 goals, Kassie Thibodeau (Rumford, Maine) – 1 goal, Evelyn Hinkley (West Gardiner, Maine) 1-goal, Lindsey Keenan (Naples, Maine) – 1 goal all scored for Southern Maine.  

Amanda Bradley (Peabody, Mass.) – 2 goals and Tara McLaughlin (Woburn, Mass), Kirsten Bradley (Peabody, Mass.), Rose Sullivan (Charlestown, Mass.), and Shayla Inglis (Lowell, Mass.) – one goal apiece all scored for Salem State.

Jordan netted the first goal of the contest as the two teams traded scores to begin the game. However, the Huskies scored five unanswered goals in just under an eight-minute span to take control. Violette, Jordan and Hinkley potted three straight free position scores and Jordan added her third goal of the game before Sullivan answered for the Vikings with her own free position goal with 16 seconds remaining in the half as the Huskies took a four-score advantage into halftime. Southern Maine held an 18-4 advantage in shots in the first half.

The Huskies continued their scoring spree in the second. Farley opened the half with her third of the game. Violette notched back-to-back scores before Thibodeau made it 11-3 with 23:52 remaining in the second. Violette then pushed the lead to 12-3 with a second half, hat-trick. Bradley and Inglis got two back for the Vikings as Salem State pulled to within 12-5 with 21:02 left.

Neenan made it an eight-goal game with her first score of the night while Jordan notched two more goals before Bradley capped the scoring to make the final 15-6.      

Both starting goalies were replaced after halftime. Salem State's Gianna DeNisco (Peabody, Mass.) made eight saves in one half of work while Southern Maine's Hala Van Nostrand (Granby, Conn.) earned the win making one save in thirty minutes of action.

Mariah Vaillancourt (Lewiston, Maine) replaced Van Nostrand while Trisha MacLean (Medford, Mass.) subbed in for DeNisco. Vaillancourt gave up three goals without making a save and MacLean made two saves against eight goals allowed. The Huskies held a 28-8 advantage in shots.
