SALEM, Mass. -- Mary McCafferty (Wall Township, N.J.) scored two goals to lead #3 Elmira to a 6-1 win against Salem State in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) contest on Saturday afternoon. The Soaring Eagles go to 13-2-1 on the year and remain unbeaten in conference at 11-0. The Vikings slip to 2-12 and 1-9 in the NEHC.
The two teams played to a scoreless first period tie. However, Elmira's offense began to click in the second period, scoring two goals just over two and a half minutes apart enroute to a four-goal period. Emma Crocker (Abington, Mass.) knocked in a rebound at the 6:52 mark before Claire Meeder (Woodbury, Minn.) found a wide open net, redirecting a missed shot past goalie Kaia Hollingsworth (Methuen, Mass.) on her stick side. At turnover in the neutral zone by the Vikings led to 3-on-1 opportunity for Elmira, which McCafferty turned into a goal at 10:52 of the period. Meeder added her second goal while the Soaring Eagles were shorthanded, making the score 4-0.
McCafferty's power play goal just 00:28 seconds into the third made it 5-0 in favor of Elmira. Morgan Mordini (North Attleboro, Mass.) redirected a shot from the point for the the Soaring Eagles' sixth goal at 9:46 of the third period. Salem State ended the shutout as Brenna Greene (Haverhill, Mass.) skated through Elmira's defense and converted a backhander with less than three minutes remaining in the game.
Alayna Breivogel (Kenny Lake, Alaska) made 10 saves in the victory while Hollingsworth stopped 49 shots. The Soaring Eagles held a 55-11 shot advantage.
