Giles Scores Twice in Salem State's 4-1 Victory

SALEM, Mass. - Amanda Giles (Merrimack, N.H.) scored two goals to lead the Salem State Vikings to a 4-1 victory over the New England College Pilgrims at Richard H. Rockett Arena on Saturday. The Vikings scored three goals in the first period, two from Giles as Salem State picked up their first of the season to go to 1-2 and 1-1 in the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC). New England College drops to 0-4 on the year and 0-2 in the NEHC.

Five minutes into the first period, Ally Webster (Hanson, Mass.) from the middle passed out to Isabella Perotti (Winthrop, Mass.) whose shot was redirected by Giles putting the Vikings up 1-0. 

A few minutes later, Perotti connected with Giles again as Giles scored from the right side of the net for her second goal to extend the Vikings' lead to 2-0 at the 12:44 mark.

With 6:09 left in the first period, Salem State lost the puck outside of the offensive zone. Vanessa VanBuskirk (Winthrop, Mass.) recovered the puck and passed it ahead to Carolyn Mahoney (Melrose, Mass.) for a two on one break. Mahoney raced down the ice and lasered the puck into the top of the net to make it 3-0 game.

With five minutes remaining in the second period, Cortney Reyes (Chino Hoills, Calif.) had the puck and shifted around three Pilgrims and took a close-range shot to give the Vikings a 4-0 cushion.

New England College got on the board with a power play goal from Kaylee Cross (Arvada, Colo.) with three minutes left in the third period to close the scoring.

Salem State had a huge advantage in shots with 42 to New England College's 12.  

Sarah Plourde (Hooksett, NH) earned the win (1-1) finishing with 17 saves and allowing one goal.

Cianna Weir (Olds, Alberta) took the loss making 12 saves while conceding three goals. Sean D'urso (Andover, Mass.) had 26 saves in relief in two periods.
