Hawks Overpower Vikings

SALEM, Mass. - Katy Meehan's (Quincy, Mass.) two goals and two assists propelled the St. Anselm Hawks to a 10-0 shutout over Salem State in the Vikings' season opener at Richard H. Rockett Arena on Military Appreciation Night. St. Anselm controlled possession all game and got off to a hot start in the first period scoring five goals. Salem State struggled to score as a result of being in their defensive zone for much of the game. The Hawks improve to 6-3 on the season while the Vikings fall to 0-1 on the year.

In the sixth minute of the first period, Gabrielle Huson (Edina, Minn.) shot it just inside the blue line and the puck soared into the top right corner to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

A minute later, St. Anselm scored again as Megan Klaus (State College, Pa.) passed it in the middle of the ice to Kenadie Cooper (Gilbert, Ariz.). Cooper took a low shot to put the Hawks ahead 2-0.

With 6:27 remaining in the first period, the Hawks had a power play as Katy Meehan (Quincy, Mass.) passed it to Julia Scannell (Milton, Mass.) for a one-timer, who extended the lead to 3-0.

With less than five minutes left in the period, Cooper won a faceoff in Salem State's zone to open up Huson for her second goal of the game as St. Anselm took a 4-0 lead.

For nearly the entirety of the first period, the puck was in the Hawks' offensive zone. St. Anselm dominated possession by scoring four goals on 22 shots.

In the second period, Klaus took a shot but was saved by Sarah Plourde (Hooksett, NH). Erin Meyers (St. Paul, Minn.) got the rebound for a tip-in as the Hawks went ahead 5-0.

St. Anselm went on to score three more goals in the second period from Erin Meyers (Saint Paul, Minn.) Meehan and Jamie Gottwald (Easton, Mass.) up 7-0.

In the third period, the Hawks scored three goals by Meehan, Gottwald, and Scannell to make it a 10-0 game.

St. Anselm had a huge advantage on shot attempts with 59 to Salem State's six shots.

The Hawks were 2-3 in power plays and the Vikings were 0-3.

Michaela Kane (Haverhill, Mass.) in net earned the win (3-2) finishing with six saves in the shutout. Plourde took the loss (0-1) allowing seven goals while saving 22 shots. Freshman Dana Smullen (Peabody, Mass.) replaced Plourde in the second and made 26 saves on 29 attempts in just over thirty minutes of action.
