Beacons Win 3-0 Over Vikings

BOSTON, Mass.  – Salem State allowed a pair of first period goals as UMass Boston skated to a 3-0 win over Salem State in a New England Hockey Conference matcup  on Saturday afternoon at the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink.

The Vikings are now 6-11-3 and 3-8-2 in the NEHC while the Beacons go tob8-11-2 and 5-6-2 in conference.

UMass Boston got on the board early thanks to a power-play goal at Jane Morrisette (Pembroke, Mass.) who fired in the puck right in front of the blue line.  The shot would deflect off the bottom of the cross bar and off the back of Isabelle Woodward (Ottawa, Ontario) to give the Beacons an early 1-0 lead.

Just over seven minutes later Jenessa Hernandez (Chicago, Ill.) scored her first collegiate goal on a perfectly placed shot to the upper near post.  Katie Leffler (Key Largo, Fla.), found Hernandez wide open on the far side of the ice.  Hernandez saw the open lane, and fired the puck home to give her, her first career point as a Beacon.

The Beacons dominated play offensive as they outshot the Vikings 10-4.  In the second, the Beacons would continue the offensive pressure.  On their first penalty kill of the afternoon, UMass got their first shorthanded goal of the season.

Morrisette found Casey Adimey (Buffalo, N.Y.) on a great counter attack, just moments into the Salem State power-play.  The senior forward hit her teammate on a perfect cross ice pass.  The freshman defenseman then hit a perfect one-timer that Woodward had no chance to save.

After the goal, the Vikings turned to Sarah Plourde (Hoosett, N.H.) to close out the game between the pipes.  Plourde played solid in goal, but was faced with constant pressure from an energetic Beacons squad.
