Vikings, Panthers Play to 1-1 Draw

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore goalie Isabelle Woodward (Ottawa, Ontario) made 43 saves as Salem State came back to earn a 1-1 tie against Plymouth State in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) game at Hanaway Rink on Saturday afternoon. The Vikings go to 2-7-1 and 2-5-1 in the NEHC while the Panthers move to 2-4-2 and 2-2-2 in conference.

PSU took a 1-0 lead when senior Taylor Jackson (St. Albans, Vt.) scored midway through the first period. The Panthers broke the ice midway through the period when sophomore Amber Thomas (Cornwall, Ontario) had her initial shot saved, but in the ensuing scrum in front of the net Jackson was able to poke the puck in, leading to hundreds of teddy bears being thrown onto the ice.

The Vikings scored the equalizer at the 6:24 mark of the second period. Junior Kerryann Goode (Millis, Mass.) skated down the left side on a 2-on-1 break and whipped a wrist shot to the far post. Sophomore goalie Alex Rajsigl (Tecumseh, Ontario) made a kick save but the puck rebounded right to senior Danielle Kelley (Charlestown, Mass.) who deposited it into the open net.

Plymouth State had a golden opportunity at the end of the period. Kennedy blasted a slap shot wide that deflected off the end boards, around the goal, and right to junior Julie Nagel (Canton, Mass.) on the back side, but Woodward made a sprawling save.

The Panthers had the best scoring chance in the third period on an odd-man rush, but Maggy was denied on the doorstep and the game went into overtime.

PSU had the only real opportunity in the extra frame when junior Amanda McPherson (Livonia, Mich.) skated into the zone along the left side and fired a wrist shot to the nearside post, but the puck deflected off the pipe and the teams were forced to settle for a tie.

Rajsigl made 22 stops for the Panthers.
