Worcester State Defeats Salem State 64-47

SALEM, Mass. - Charlotte MacMillan (Brunswick, Maine) posted 11 points (FG 5-14, 3PT 1-6) five rebounds and three steals for the Worcester State Lancers in their 64-47 win over the Salem State Vikings on Saturday afternoon at Twohig Gymnasium. The Lancers move to 9-6 on the season and 1-2 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC). The Vikings fall to 4-11 on the year and 1-3 in the MASCAC.

Both teams shot 1-6 from the field in the first five minutes of the game, but Worcester State held a 5-2 lead. The Lancers carried an 11-4 lead into the second quarter.

With 1:16 left in the second quarter, Emma Poplawski (Rowe, Mass.) hit a mid-range jump shot just as the shot clock expired to push Worcester State's lead to 27-7. Salem State's scoring drought stretched from the 5:09 mark of the first quarter until Nicole Freddo (Marblehead, Mass.) completed a three-point play with 4:51 remaining in the second

The Lancers exited the first half with a 27-17 lead. Worcester State shot 33.3% (FG 9-27) from the floor while Salem State shot 12.5% (FG 3-24) from the field. The Vikings committed 19 turnovers in the first half.

Sarah Blomgren (Lunenburg, Mass,) led the half in points with nine on 3-6 shooting along with three rebounds, and two steals.

To open the third quarter, the Lancers forced three consecutive turnovers and scored six points on the fastbreak extending the margin to 36-7. Elizabeth Gallella's (Tewksbury, Mass.) layup gave Worcester State its largest lead, 46-15 with 4:26 left in the third. The Vikings shot the ball better in the fourth quarter (8-18, 44.4%), led by Freddo's seven points, but the Lancers kept pace before setting for a 64-47 win.

Worcester State finished shooting the ball 26-62 (41.9%). Salem State ended 15-53 (28.3%) from the floor.

Turnovers were bountiful with the Vikings committing 31 turnovers and the Lancers 20. The Lancers finished with 31 points off turnovers.

Blomgren added 11 points and two steals for Worcester State.
