Salem State to Honor Women's Basketball Great Evelyn Oquendo' 87 in Halftime Ceremony on February 9th

SALEM, Mass. -- Salem State will honor former women's basketball great Evelyn Oquendo '87 in a halftime ceremony on February 9th during the Vikings' home game against Westfield State.  

Oquendo, who was recently inducted into the inaugural class of the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Hall of Fame, will be awarded her hall of fame plaque from director of athletics Tracey Hathaway.           

Oquendo is Salem State's all-time women's leading scorer with 1,738 points and was a three-time National Women's Basketball Association First Team All-American. Oquendo co-captained the Lady Vikings to the school's first ever NCAA national title in 1986. She was a WBCA All-American first team selection three years in a row (1984, '85, '86) and was ranked by the WBCA as one of the top 27 Division III players over the past 25 years in 2006.   

A four-time All-New England and All-MASCAC performer, she was the 1986 New England College Athlete of the Year and runner-up for National Division III player of the year in 1984. Her number 24 was retired by Salem State in 2010.     

The Salem State women's basketball game against the Owls will begin at 3:00 PM in Twohig Gymnasium.
