Fernandes Posts Double-Double in Salem State's 48-44 Win Over Endicott

SALEM, Mass. -- Kia Fernandes (Wareham, Mass.) posted a 17-point and 10-rebound performance to propel the Salem State Vikings to a 48-44 win over the Endicott Gulls at Twohig Gymnasium on Saturday. The Vikings improve to 2-7 on the season while Gulls even their record at 4-4 on the year.

It was a slow start for the both teams as the Vikings shot just 13.3% (2-15) and Endicott shot 31.3% (5-16) from the field in the first quarter.

Struggles from the floor continued for both teams into the second quarter. The Vikings shot 10.3% (3-29) from the floor and Endicott shot 27.3% (9-33). At the end of the half, the Gulls were on top 22-14. Endicott's Emily Pratt (Gardner, Mass.) led the half in points with 11.

To open the second half, Gianna Moschella (Peabody, Mass.) made two quick layups which opened the door for a Vikings' 9-0 run. The Vikings were energized on both ends of the floor keeping Endicott scoreless during the first five minutes of the third quarter.

It was a nailbiter in the fourth quarter, but Fernandes' three straight baskets put the Vikings over the top to solidify the win.

Pratt finished with 15 points (7-20) and grabbed nine rebounds for the Gulls.

Moschella had a double-double of 10 points (4-16) and 10 rebounds.

Both teams didn't shoot well with the Gulls finishing 27.7% (18-65) and the Vikings 26.2% (16-61). Salem State had more opportunities at the free throw line connecting on 55.6% (15-27) attempts and Endicott just 5-9 (55.6%).
