Salem State Defeats Gordon 85-60 For First Win

WENHAM, MASS. -- Kia Fernandes (Wareham, Mass.) scored a game-high 31 points as Salem State (1-4) earned their first win of the season with an 85-60 victory over Gordon College on Tuesday evening. Fernandes went 11-13 from the field and 7-10 from the free throw line as the Vikings snapped their four-game losing streak.

Fernandes showed her versatility early as she scored the first six points for her team to get the momentum going for the Vikings. Gordon answered back with a few quick layups of their own to keep the Vikings within an arm's reach however Brianna Rodrigues (Jr./Salem, Mass.) closed out the first quarter with eight of the Vikings 28 points.

The Scots started the second quarter with some fire, but Salem saw nothing but net as the Vikings stretched their lead to as many as 20 points, before Gordon cut the lead to 16 after a Delaney McDonnell free throw to lead 49-33 going into halftime.

Going into the second half, Fernandes' dominant play stumped Gordon as the Scots couldn't stop the senior who scored more than half of her team's total points in the third quarter. Foley tried to keep the Scots in it, dropping nine points of her own in the third.

The Scots however had no answers for Salem's high-powered offense as the visitors cruised to a 25 point victory over the Scots.

Gianna Moschella (Jr./Peabody, Mass.) netted 19 points for the Vikings.
