Gulls Take Two From Salem State

BEVERLY, Mass. – Salem State (7-21) lost both ends of their doubleheader to Endicott (19-7) on Wednesday, which included, Maria Hanchuk (South Windsor, Conn.) tossing her second career no-hitter against the Vikings in an 8-0 win in game one that lasted six innings. Jaylin Couto (Taunton, Mass.) pitched a one-hitter in game two for Endicott as the Gulls completed the sweep with a 9-0 victory in five innings.

Game 1

Hanchuk nearly threw her first collegiate perfect game, but a wild pitch on a swinging strikeout in the top of the second spelled the difference between perfection and the no-hitter. Hanchuk struck out nine in the win. Starter Emily Carter (Warwick, R.I.) lasted 5.2 ininngs for the Vikings, allowing five earned runs on 14 hits with a walk and strikeout.

Offensively, Katie Watts (Swampscott, Mass.) and Chrissy Marotto (Southington, Conn.) led the Gulls with three RBI apiece.

Game 2

Couto allowed just one hit, a third inning double to Gracie Hogan (Blackstone, Mass.) enroute to a 9-0 win. Couto struck out six and did not allow a walk in four innings of work. Molly O'Neill (Shrewsbury, Mass.) pitched a scoreless fifth for the gulls. Hogan took the mound for the Vikings and was charged with nine runs on 10 hits with a walk and strikeout.

Watts also knocked in two more runs in the nightcap, while Keelin Spencer (San Jose, Calif.) and Lauren Misiaszek (Londonderry, N.H.) drove in a pair as well.
