Salem State Sweeps Mass Maritime

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Sydney Chiasson (Hudson, Mass.) went a combined 9-for-9 with six runs in a doubleheader sweep of Mass Maritime on Saturday afternoon. The sophomore went 5-for-5 with three runs in a 9-5 game one win and followed up with a 4-for-4 performance with three runs scored in a five- inning 10-0 victory in game two. The Vikings now stand at 11-11 on the season and 2-2 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC). The Buccaneers slide to 0-12 and 0-4 in the conference.

Game 1

Dominique Del Vecchio (Stoneham, Mass.) pitched a complete game victory in game one, allowing two earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.

An error gave led to three Salem State runs in the first inning. The Vikings extended the lead to 6-0 in the second as Chiasson, Gracie Hogan (Northbridge, Mass.) and Gabryanna Cardenas (Oxford, Mass.) all added RBI singles in the inning. An Ivy Bonoldi (Medfield, Mass.) single increased the lead to 7-0 in the fourth and two more runs in the fifth on an RBI double by Cardenas and groundout by Del Vecchio gave Salem State a commanding 9-0 lead.

However, Mass Maritime came back in the bottom of the inning, scoring five runs while sending 11 batters to the plate in cutting the deficit to four runs. Camryn Roberts-Capak (Marstons Mills, Mass.) doubled in the first run while Rachel Gardner (Bourne, Mass.) added a two-run single.          Malarie Pittsley (Dighton, Mass.) and Savanna Leite (New Bedford, Mass.) each singled in a run before Del Vecchio recorded the final out on a fielder's choice.

Del Vecchio retired the side in the seventh to record her fourth win of the season. Jenna Nalette (Goffstown, N.H) took the loss, allowing 17 hits and eight earned runs with a strikeout and pair of walks.

Cardenas finished 3-for-5 with two RBI for Salem State.

Game 2

Chiasson and Hogan were a combined 7-for-7 with five runs and an RBI to lead the way in a 10-0, five- inning victory in game two.

Leading 2-0 in the second, the Vikings scored five runs with Chloe Manousos (Lowell, Mass.) providing a two-run double in the inning to break the game open. An unearned run in the fourth allowed Salem State to end the game an inning later as RBI triple's by Manousos and Luciana Mastromatteo (Peabody, Mass.) gave Salem State a 10-0 lead.

Hogon earned the win allowing just four hits with two walks in three innings of work. Del Vecchio threw two scoreless innings in relief, giving up just three hits with a strikeout. Malarie Pittsley (Dighton, Mass) was charged with the loss after allowing nine earned runs on 16 hits with two strikeouts.

Manousos and Cardenas each collected a pair of hits and had three RBI apiece while Mastromatteo went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI.
