Vikings Take Game Two Against Gordon

SALEM, Mass. – Pitcher Caitlin Catalanotto (Kingston, N.H.) threw a complete game, striking out eight while allowing just  two earned runs to lead the Gordon Fighting Scots to a 7-2 win over the Salem State Vikings in the first game of their scheduled doubleheader. Gracie Hogan (Northbridge, Mass.) threw five scoreless innings to help Salem State to a 7-5 victory over the Fighting Scots in game two.  

Game 1

Catalanotto improved her record to 7-4 after giving up just four hits.

In the first inning, two walks set up Luciana Mastromatteo (Peabody, Mass.), who hit a single to score Dominique Del Vecchio (Stoneham, Mass.) giving the Vikings a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the third inning, Laura Bieren (Groton, Mass.) reached first base an error. A Lily Rivera (Concord N.H.) two-run home run put the Fighting Scots on top 2-1.   

In the bottom of the inning, Chloe Manousos (Lowell, Mass.) answered, lofting a solo home run to center, tying the game at 2-2.

With two players in scoring position in the fifth, Brook Westmoreland (Saugus, Mass.) threw a wild pitch allowing Bieren to score the fourth Gordon run. A Hunt RBI-double to left field extended the Fighting Scot's lead to 5-2.

Citlin Catalanotto's (Kingston, N.H.) single with the bases loaded in the sixth made the score 7-2 in favor of the Fighting Scots.  

The Vikings' Westmoreland earned the loss, finishing all seven innings while giving up three earned runs with a strikeout.

Manousos finished 3-for-4 with a home run and double.

Game 2

Hogan allowed just two hits before exiting in the sixth with Salem State ahead 3-0. The Vikings scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a commanding 7-0 lead. A walk to Gabryanna Cardenas (Oxford,Mass.) plated one run before Sydney Chiasson (Hudson, Mass.) made it 5-0 with an RBI hit left. A two-run throwing error by the shortstop gave the Vikings a seven-run advantage.

Gordon scored a pair of runs in the sixth as game one starter Westmoreland replaced Hogan. An RBI double by Lily Rivera (Concord, N.H.) was followed by an error by the shortstop which allowed a second run to come home.

The Fighting Scots rallied in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs while leaving the game-tying runs on second and third. A walk and double set up an RBI single by Karissa Hatchell (Eaton, Colo.). Dominique Del Vecchio (Stoneham, Mass.) relieved Westmoreland and a sacrifice fly by Hatchell cut the deficit to 7-5. However, following a walk, Del Vecchio cemented the win with a fly out to center.

Del Vecchio picked up the save without allowing a run in 0.2 innings of work. Jasmine Mullally (Waterford, N.Y) suffered the loss, going 6.0 inning with three earned runs on seven hits and three strikeouts.
