Vikings Defeat Corsairs 7-2

SALEM, Mass. – Salem State improved to 2-1 in the Little East Conference with a 7-2 victory over UMass Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon at The Central Campus Tennis Courts. Andrew Muttiah (Colombo, Sri Lanka) picked up a straight sets win at first singles and teamed with Chen Chen (Lawrence, Mass.) for victory at first doubles to lead the way.

The Vikings are now 2-3 overall on the season while the Corsairs slip to 4-6 and 2-1 in the league.    

Salem State swept doubles play as Muttiah and Chen led the way with an 8-5 victory over Tristin Viale (Westfield, Mass.) / Anthony Joseph (Acushnet, Mass.). Roni Bazile (Brockton, Mass.) / Mitchell Dyer  (N. Attleboro, Mass.) teamed for a win at second doubles with an 8-3 victory against Eli Brooks (Franklin, Mass.) / Baylen Harper / (Leicester, Mass.).

Moses Ba  (Lynn, Mass.) / Noah Hodgkins (Winthrop, Mass.) earned the third point with an 8-4 decision at third doubles.  

The Vikings won four-of-six singles matches, all in straight sets to secure the win. Muttiah won 6-0, 6-1 over Brooks while Bazile triumphed 7-5, 6-3 over Viale at second singles. Dyer and Chen won at third and fourth singles respectively.

Nutter defeated Ba, who retired in the second set, for UMass Dartmouth at fifth singles while Noseworthy won the second point for the Corsairs with a 6-1, 7-6 (9-7) win against Hodgkins.
