SALEM, Mass. - Lucas Amaral's (Peabody, Mass) first-half goal proved to be the difference as Salem State outlasted the Wentworth Leopards 1-0 at Alumni Field on Wednesday night. The Vikings even their record at 2-2 on the season while Wentworth slides to 1-2-1 on the year.
Neither team could gain much of an edge in the first half. Amaral took a free kick in the 38th minute and rifled a shot from 20 yards out into the back of the net, giving the Vikings a 1-0 lead.
Midway through the second, Wentworth had a prime scoring chance on a corner as Eddie Smith (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) took a shot, but he was stopped by Christopher Jimenez (Nashua, N.H.), who made a critical save to keep the Vikings ahead.
For the game, Salem State attempted just six shots with four on target. Wentworth finished with nine shots total; eight on net.
Jimenez finished with eight saves for the Vikings to earn the shutout. Wentworth's Robbie West (Weymouth, Mass.) saved three shots, conceding one goal.
