Salem State, Pine Manor Play to 2-2 Draw

SALEM, Mass. – The Salem State Vikings hosted the Pine Manor Gators on Senior Night and the match resulted in a 2-2 draw. Seniors Gus Savage (Georgetown, Mass.), Luke Moylan (West Boylston), Matt Lynch (Salisbury, Mass.), and Nick Bettencourt (Peabody, Mass.) were all honored for their careers for the Vikings. All seniors started the game and displayed their leadership on the field.

In the 21st minute, Ryan Smith (Shelton, Conn.) crossed the ball to setup Lucas Amaral (Peabody, Mass.) for a header that floated over goalkeeper Angel Salazar's (El Paso, Texas) head.

In the 40th minute, Daniel Silvas (Hobbs, N.M.) recovered the ball off a deflection and sent a powerful shot into the back of the net to even the score at one.

In the second half, Pine Manor fouled Salem State in the box. Igor Caldas (Vitoria, Brazil) took the penalty shot and scored on a stunned Salazar in the 62nd minute to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead.

A Dominique Panmo (Lynn, Mass.) foul then resulted in a Gators' free kick. George Fernandez (Houston, Texas) volleyed the ball to Silvas, who headed the ball in the net in the 74th minute to tie the game.

The match went to extra time but both teams couldn't score. Pine Manor had two corner kicks but couldn't take advantage of those chances. Salem State had a great opportunity to win the game when Panmo sent a lead pass to Gabriel Meireles (Everett, Mass.), but his shot was wide left.

The Vikings led the game with 16 shots while the Gators attempted nine. Both Pine Manor and Salem State attempted five corners.

For the Gators, Salazar saved eight shots. For the Vikings, Savage and Christopher Jimenez (Nashua, N.H.) split the time as goalkeepers. Savage saved two shots and Jimenez stopped three shots.

Salem State will face MCLA on the road in a vital conference matchup on Friday.
