Salem State Slips Past UMass Boston 1-0

UMass Boston dominated the game through the first 75 minutes but struggled to get clear chances on goal. The majority of the Beacons best chances went just high or wide, as Jimenez gladly watched 17 of the Beacons' 25 shots miss the frame.

Junior Raffi DeSouza (Watertown, Mass.) had two of UMass Boston's best chances in the contest, as he ripped a pair of shots just wide of the far post on looks from the top of the 18.  

Salem State made the Beacons pay for their lack of finishing in the 77^th minute. UMass Boston started the play with a corner kick that bounced to John Santos (Brockton, Mass.), whose shot on the turf was cleared away by a defender. A long clearance bounced right at midfield, where Meireles battled with two Beacons backs. One of the players fell to the turf, allowing Meireles to race unabated into the box and right at Carter. The natural lefty slid a hard shot just inside the far post for a 1-0 advantage at 76:38.

UMass Boston took advantage of the Vikings defense shell to post season-highs in shots (25) and corner kicks (12), but in the end they failed to really test Salem's Christopher Jimenez. The junior keeper made four saves in each half to record his fourth shutout of the season.

On the Beacons side, junior Aidan Carter (Weymouth, Mass.) made his first start of the year for UMass Boston. Carter posted one save on two shots to fall to 0-1 on the season.

The Beacons outshot the Vikings 25-8 and held an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal. UMass Boston also led 12-1 in corner kicks.
