Salem State Scores Second Straight Shutout With 2-0 Win Over Curry

SALEM, MASS. --  Edwin Demoya (Salem, Mass.) scored in the 17th minute and Salem State's defense held firm as the Vikings notched their second consecutive shutout with a 2-0 win over Curry College in the championship game of the Salem State Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Demoya took a feed from Igor Caldas (Victoria, Brazil) and chipped a shot past keeper Paul DeMaio (North Andover, Mass.) for the contest's opening score.

The Colonels had an opportunity to take the lead in the 14th minute on a free kick, but Nick Randall's (Walpole, Mass.) attempt was deflected off the crossbar. Demoya nearly added his second goal of the game in the 36th minute as the sophomore broke free with a clear path to the goal, but Demaio made a point-blank save to keep the deficit at just a goal.

Curry appeared to score midway through the second half, but a handball nullified the goal allowing the Vikings to maintain a 1-0 lead. Salem State took a 2-0 lead in the 63rd minute due to an unlucky bounce caused by a Colonels player, which found the back of the Curry net. Damon Decleciano (Lowell, Mass.) was credited with the score.

Christopher Jimenez (Nashua, N.H.) picked up his second straight win of the season in goal, making two stops. DeMaio finished the game with three saves for the Colonels. The Vikings held an 11-5 advantage in shots while both teams attempted three corner kicks.
