Eastern Connecticut Tops Salem State 11-5 in Season Finale

SALEM, Mass. - Kyle Cardoza's (Waterford, Conn.) notched two goals and four assists to lift the Eastern Connecticut Warriors to an 11-5 win over the Salem State Vikings at Alumni Field on Friday. Eastern Connecticut improves to 6-8 on the season and 3-4 in the Little East Conference (LEC) while Salem State falls to 3-11 on the year and 1-7 in the LEC.

Matthew Rougeot (Cheshire, Conn.) - 3 goals, Jake Liebowitz (Trumbull, Conn.) - 3 goals, Jacob Testa (Southington, Conn.) - 2 goals, Wes Thompson (Watertown, Conn.) - 1 goal all scored by Eastern Connecticut. Jay Colletti (Billerica, Mass.) - 1 goal, Tyler Morris (Billerica, Mass.) - 1 goal, Kevin Albert (Canton, Mass.) - 1 goal, Zach Royal (Abington, Mass.) - 1 goal all scored by Salem State.

It was scoreless in the first quarter until Dan McLaughlin (Boston, Mass.) found Colletti who shot it into the bottom left corner of the net as the Vikings went up 1-0 with 6:36 left in the quarter. Thompson scored a goal to tie it up for the Warriors with 33 seconds remaining in the quarter.

In the second quarter, Cardoza assisted Rougeo, who's laser went into the right corner giving Eastern Connecticut a 2-1 lead at 13:09. Salem State quickly responded a minute later with a goal from Albert to even the score at 2-2. At 8:13, Albert found Morris outside the crease and Morris scored an easy goal to jump back ahead 3-2. Rougeot ripped a shot from ten yards out to score his second goal of the game and tied it at 3-3 with 6:16 left in the half.

With 0:44 remaining before halftime, Liebowitz's goal put the Warriors up 4-3 in a tight game.

In the third quarter, Eastern Connecticut went on to score two more goals  to lead 6-3 at 11:54. At 7:03, Royal took a shot diving into the air and found the back of the net making it 6-4.

Late in the fourth quarter, taking advantage of a Salem State penalty, the Warriors scored four consecutive goals to seal the win.

For Eastern Connecticut, goalie Jack Farrell (Stratford, Conn.) earned the win (6-8) allowing four goals with seven saves on 11 shots. John Funk (Southbury, Conn.) finished with four saves and one goal allowed. For the Vikings, goalie Jack Ganter (Lynnfield, Mass.) took the loss (0-5) with 11 goals allowed and nine saves.
