Huskies Earn 13-6 Triumph Over Salem State


SALEM, MASS. - Nick DelGiudice (Oakland, Maine) and Paul Leonardo (Groton, Mass.) notched three goals apiece as Southern Maine used a six-goal first quarter to earn a 13-6 victory over Salem State in a Little East Conference game at Alumni Field on Wednesday evening. The Huskies even their record at 6-6 overall and improve to 3-1 in conference. The Vikings slip to 3-9 and 0-4 in the Little East.

Seth Wing West Gardiner, Maine) - 2 goals, Sam Fortin (Brunswick, Maine) - 2 goals, Tristan Dundas (Abbotsford, BC) - 2 goals and Bryce Randall (Portland, Maine) scored for Southern Maine.

Charlie Bourgeois (Billerica, Mass.) - 3 goals, Zach Persson (Danvers, Mass.) - 2 goals and Hunter Spencer (Beverly, Mass.) tallied scores for Salem State.

Bourgeois put Salem State on the board first as he rifled in a shot from Jay Colletti (Billerica, Mass.). DelGiudice answered with consecutive goals for Southern Maine and Dundas added a third for the Huskies less than 2:30 into the game. Bourgeois added his second of the game before Randall made it 4-2 in favor of Southern Maine at the 8:45 mark. Spencer and back-to-back scores from Wing made the score 6-3 after one period of play.

Bourgeois netted a hat-trick early in the second quarter, pulling Salem State to within 6-4. However, Fortin and Leonardo answered for the Huskies in the final minutes, allowing Southern Maine to enter halftime with an 8-4 lead.

Persson made the score 8-5, 8:26 into the third. Fortin pushed the lead back to four with his second of the game with 3:23 remaining in the third.

The Huskies put the game away with four goals in the fourth. DelGiudice's third pushed the lead to 10-5 before Persson got one back for the Vikings. Dundas then scored his second before Leonardo closed the scoring with a pair of goals to make the final 13-6.

Zach Bessette (Readfield, Maine) made 16 saves in the win while Chris Schaub (Brewster, N.Y.) had 12 stops for the Vikings.
